Johnny Cash - Hurt

Conventions of contemporary music video

In class we analysed Johnny Cash music video named 'Hurt'. The location of the video is in a old fashioned house with antique furniture all around. Johnny cash himself is sitting on a throne chair which gives the audience a hint of johnny being a 'king'. We also could view the American flag which may epitomise the American dream that johnny is looking up to. There is also a museum which ma signify the fame, there are also elements of archive footage of johnny reminiscing the past and the good old days.

Furthermore we could view a museum getting diminished and also a picture of Johnny's mother 'everyone goes away at the end' when johnny is singing this verse we feel a sense of sympathy and gives us a hint that fame and money does not mean everything. We could also clearly view in the video a huge antique table full of food this portrays how johnny is full of fortune, but he as no one to share it with. There are no friends and family he could relate to so taking drugs was the next step.

There re also a montage of many clips put together to show johnny loneliness and solitude. archive footage of johnny cash and his wife showing how everyone just went.
